Ethno Square Festival 2011
Paola again returned to Berovo, Macedonia, where her hometown hosted the 3rd annual Ethno Square Festival in August 2011.

A documentary of the festival and the folkloric culture of the Maleshevo region will be released in January 2012. Here's a 4-minute trailer.
Information on the event from past years is given below including Paola's 2009 article "Chelum, A Transcendent State" published in The Gilded Serpent, and her NME Shockwave award-winning documentary "Raqin' in the Roots with Malesh-Roma," produced in the summer of 2007.
Split Tribal Fest 2010

Imagine performing in a historic Roman palace – its time-worn pediment rising high above as the audience finds its place among ancient marble columns and stairs. Colored lights cast a mystic glow as the music lashes out, grabbing the public's attention and holding it rapt as international soloists and troupes cast their spell onstage.

For three days and nights in August, the Split Tribal Fest gave us that stage setting – and much more. Croatia's second largest city is the site of Roman Emperor Diocletian's palace on the seaside and a living museum of antiquities. In Split, it is not uncommon for one's home to share a wall, a column, or an ancient walkway dating back to antiquity . Romance and history converse in its streets as the salty Adriatic breezes waft through its corridors, invoking a sense of timelessness.

Ethno Square Festival 2010

Paola returns to her hometown of Berovo August 26-28, 2010 for the 2nd annual Ethno Square Festival to promote the rich heritage of unique Balkan dance and music of eastern Macedonia.

Paola was instrumental in helping to revive an annual festival in Berovo through her efforts of her NME Shockwave award-winning documentary "Raqin' in the Roots with Malesh-Roma," produced in the summer of 2007.

Sphinx Festival 2009
2 In Cairo, Egypt in 2009, Paola Blanton taught the "Use of props" at the A-Z Bellydance Teacher Training course. She showed participants how to apply the routines while dancing with the cane, veil, finger cymbals and wings. The routines using the cane grew into a beautiful Saiidi stage choreography, as she merged creative forces with fellow teacher Suzanne Oehlers. The students were delighted as they experienced Paola's wonderful teaching and ability to apply Egyptian dance aesthetics within a framework and allow the dance to unfold organically, whilst working with the skills and abilities of the participants. Paola's passion, knowledge, humor and dedication to bellydancing truly enlivened the course and made it memorable for all who attended, including myself and Suzanne who taught alongside her. The participants particularly enjoyed her additional information from her Physical Theatre and Duncan Dance studies, which they felt gave their dancing depth and richness.

After the Cairo Teacher Training, Paola taught and performed at the Sphinx Festival by the Pyramids, where she gave four inspiring workshops themed "Dancing the Elements". She delivered fabulous classes to live Egyptian music to eager students who had traveled from all over the world to attend the special event. The dance she taught integrated the qualities of Air, Water, Fire and Earth - demonstrating partner and group work which the participants said was "beautiful and uniting". Her perform-ance on the Fire element night was zesty and fun, and the classical performance at the Festival Gala was mezmerising. Her generous sharing of knowledge and soulful dancing at the event was greatly appreciated by all. Paola has a special way of uniting people through her teaching and dance performance, which is ultimately - universal.

ethno2

They call it chelum ... another Turkish term in the Eastern Macedonian dialect. It refers to a transcendent state of dance and music enjoyment fueled by tapanje, zurli, darabouki, tamburi, and of course the ubiquitous Rakija.

I was to meet this word a lot during my now-annual August festival season in Macedonia. For six sunny weeks, I danced, and I danced, and then I danced some more. For the past three years I had returned four times, to support the Ethno Camp festival, to research and learn the traditional dances, to perform, to enrich my musical knowledge, and to build my Balkan-Oriental fusion style. This season held amazing surprises and offered rich rewards.

Malesh-Roma 2007

In July 2007, Paola traveled with her husband, Gary, to her hometown of Berovo, situated in the hills of eastern Macedonia, to film a documentary on its unique culture of music and dance. They met Milo Destanovski - teacher, musician, community leader, and director of the Malesh-Roma folkloric troupe. At the time, Milo, Paola, and the town of Berovo were dedicated to making a yearly festival happen there - a festival for lovers of Balkan and Rom culture, for musicians, dancers, epicureans, and spirited supporters. In August 2009, Berovo hosted the inaugural Ethno Square Festival.
